Marcegaglia Stainless Sheffield has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with E.ON UK to channel waste heat from our stainless steel melting shop into Sheffield’s district heat network. This initiative marks a significant step in our sustainability journey while contributing to the city’s decarbonisation goals.

By capturing and repurposing heat generated from our production, this collaboration enhances energy efficiency and strengthens Sheffield’s position as a leader in industrial sustainability. The agreement supports the UK Government’s Heat Network Zoning strategy and aligns with Sheffield City Council’s ambitions to reduce carbon emissions. Following the connection being made with Marcegaglia, it is expected that it will enable E.ON to provide heat to around 500 commercial buildings within the Lower Don Valley Heat Zone area.

Liam Bates, President – Long Product, emphasized the importance of this project:

“As a company committed to improving sustainability, this partnership allows us to enhance our energy efficiency and contribute to the decarbonisation of the region. We are proud to be part of a project that not only supports our own sustainability goals but also plays a key role in advancing city-wide energy resilience.”

This partnership builds on our recent £50 million investment in a new Electric Arc Furnace in Sheffield, reinforcing our dedication to responsible and innovative steel production.
